The artist, Niccolò da Bologna, was active in local government and had an official job as the cityilluminator. Dominic was included on this leaf because the neighborhood of San Procolo included the parish of the church of San Domenico. The weighty presence of Dominic sets off his sensitive, expressive face and the delicate manner in which he holds a bunch of lilies. At the top left, the artist depicted a massive, imposing figure of Saint Dominic. The bottom of the page contains the coat of arms of the guild with a leather-cutting tool, a shoe, and a sandal. This leaf registers the names of all the members of the shoemaker's guild in the neighborhood of San Procolo in Bologna, the area where the leaf's artist lived. ![]() He was a financially successful artist who was appointed illuminator to the city in the 1380s and was also an active member of city government. Niccolò also illuminated a number of specialty books made for various corporate groups in the city, such as statute books and guild registers. He and his workshop later illuminated a variety of other manuscripts, including university texts, choir books and other liturgical texts, private devotional books, and even works of secular poetry and drama. The first signed works by Niccolò are all copies of Gratian'sDecretals, one of the standard works of canon law. He is known especially for his expressive figures and crowded, action-filled narrative scenes. Niccolò da Bologna was one of the most important and prolific manuscriptilluminators of the fourteenth century in Bologna, a university town famous for its law faculty. Supplemented by decorated initials, elaborate borders and miniature illustrations in shining gold and colorful brilliant paints they were reserved for special books like prayer books and altar Bibles.
